The Juliana quarry, Groeve Juliana, Schiepersberg quarry or Groeve Schiepersberg is an abandoned marl quarry and geological monument in Dutch South Limburg in the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten. The quarry is located east of Cadier en Keer in a mountain slope of the Margraten Plateau on the Sibbersloot dry valley.
The Koeberg quarry is located approximately 200 meters to the northwest.
Limestone mining began in 1938. The extracted limestone was delivered to the Stikstof Bindings Bedrijf ("Nitrogen Binding Company") of the Staatsmijn Maurits ("Maurits State Mine") in Geleen.
In 1954, extraction was stopped due to the poor quality of the marl.
In 1971, Werner Felder and Peter Bosch discovered a small prehistoric flint industry in the slope between the Koeberg quarry and the Juliana quarry. Part of the slope had then been excavated to make room for a narrow-gauge railway.
In 2011, the quarry became a nature reserve and became the property of Het Limburgs Landschap.
There is a thick limestone layer beneath the Margraten Plateau. On this limestone are coarse brown gravel deposits from the Meuse of the St. Geertruid Member, which here at the Juliana quarry on the plateau have a thickness of approximately one and a half meters. Below this Maas gravel begins the limestone of the Maastricht Formation, which dates from the Upper Cretaceous. The following limestone layers are exposed in the quarry: the Limestone of Nekum and the Horizont of Laumont, the Limestone of Emael and the Horizont of Romontbos, the Limestone of Schiepersberg and the Horizont of Schiepersberg, the Limestone of Gronsveld and the Horizont of Sint Pieter and the upper part of the Valkenburg Limestone.
Numerous geological organ pipes are visible in the quarry wall, which are filled with coarse brown gravel. These organ pipes were created when rainwater penetrated the soil and dissolved limestone.
The Juliana Quarry has been designated as the type location of the Schiepersberg Limestone.
