Location: This placer gold mine is on Portage Creek, an east-flowing tributary to the West Fork Little Delta River. The area of placer mining is near the landing strip, where Portage Creek turns from south to east. The map site is in sec. 3, T. 12 S., R. 3 E., of the Fairbanks Meridian. This is location 62 of Clark and Cobb (1972).
Geology: Most of Portage Creek drains Miocene to Pliocene Nenana Gravel and Eocene coal-bearing strata. The Nenana Gravel consists of poorly-consolidated, buff to reddish-brown, fluvial conglomerate and coarse grained sandstone interbedded with mudflow deposits and thin lignite beds (Wilson and others, 1998). The placer gold in Portage Creek probably was derived from small gold paleoplacers in the Nenana Gravel.
