ⓘ Hematite Formula: Fe2O3 Habit: pseudomorph, Hematized fossiliferous deposits of marine bi-valves Colour: Reddish brown with metallic silver where burnished Description: The beds of red Hematite "fossil" ore which lay to 16" thickness were the main exploitable deposits both at Danville and throughout the red Hematite beds of Central and Northern Central Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna river valley. Specimens from Pursel slope, collected in mid 19th century, were tested to 38.7% FeO2. In combination with Block ore and local Limestone for fluxing, these ores at Danville produced an Iron of exceptionally hich quality. |
