The City of Rockingham occupies the south-western outskirts of Perth, about a 30 minute drive from the Perth CBD. It occupies 257.1 square kilometres with a population of 120 859 (2013).

Rockingham started as a timber port, and remained a small sleepy holiday shack type of place until the 1970's. At this time major urban development began, and Rockingham is now largely a satellite suburb to Perth.

While overwhelmingly urban these days, the coast is worth a visit with several islands containing seabirds, penguins, and sea lions. The islands are connected to the mainland by boats. Dolphin swim tours are conducted in Cockburn Sound. The Rockingham foreshore is popular with families during summer. Lake Richmond thrombolites are an interesting if slow moving attraction, best appreciated with some background knowledge of them.
