Historic gold mine.

One visitor to the mine stated he was confused why the mine was called Radical, until he met Joseph Wood, and then he understood.

The claim was pegged early 1876, by Joseph Wood (or Woods), and his mining mate James Hosie. The mine was located near Perry's battery, constructed for the goldfield, and in 1877 taken over by the Smile of Fortune Mine. The Radical Mine is about 200 metres north of the highway, at the top of a steep forested embankment bordering the Ohinemuri River. Little remains at the site.

Much development work was initially undertaken, in a reef 18 inches wide, developed at two levels. While rich ore was found near surface, the deeper veins were low grade, and by 1877 the mine is on tribute. Some found was Campbell and party across several years in the early 1880's, Christy and party 1881, Reid and party, Petersen and party 1882, Bauld and party 1885.

One mention is made the mine was briefly called the Albion in 1879. In 1887, the lease was amalgamated with the neighbouring Smile of Fortune Mine.
