Historic gold mine.

The Lillis gold mine represents the last gold mining activity in the Coromandel area, ceasing in the 1970's.

The Lillis brothers were heavily involved in the community from the 1930's. Both T.M. and P.J. Lillis were on the local council, and owned a grocery store in the town. T.M. was involved in the local yachting and bowling clubs, chairman of the Coromandel Mining and Prospectors Association, and won best potato at the Coromandel Exhibition.

The mine is said to be on private property, and consists of an adit, and below this a small battery. This appears largely intact, although deteriorating over the years due to a lack of love and attention. Ore was exported to Australia for final processing.

A local operator has in the past taken groups to the top of the Tokatea Range in an all terrain vechile, then guides visitors down a diabolical old bulldozer track to the adit and battery. Other adits from various old 19th century gold mines are in the area.

The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate.
