"Alum shale" mine, worked from 1486 to 1841. Sulphuric acid was produced by natural weathering of the shale, for use by local tanneries. Also, "English Red" dye was produced by heating the shale to 600 °C.
The 170-meter-long dewatering shaft still exists and is accessible through the "Dendrologischer Garten Rother Park" arboretum.
Alexander Von Humboldt (1769-1859) tested a new mining lamp of his own design in this mine on 13 October 1796. He almost lost his life due to lack of oxygen, but the lamp continued to burn!
