Clintonite from
Maria Mine, Rocky Mining District, Rocky Range, Beaver County, Utah, USA

Locality type:Mine
Classification
Species:Clintonite
Formula:CaAlMg2(SiAl3O10)(OH)2
Comments:The specimen was analytically confirmed via EDS in our lab and is a slightly ferroan phlogopite. The report of clintonite at the locality is likely incorrect, and its original citation in "A Collectors Guide to Rock Mineral and Fossil Localities in Utah" by Dr. James Wilson (1995) was based on word of mouth only (J. Wilson, pers. comm.). The "clintonite" designation is also in conflict with the earlier report of phlogopite at the locality, cited in "Geology, Ore Deposits and Mineralogy of the Rocky Range, near Milford, Beaver Co., Utah" published by the Utah Geological and Mineral Survey (Special Studies #57) in 1982.

The full analytical data and locality history has recently been published in Mineral News (Vol.30, No. 11) November, 2014. Clintonite is therefore doubtful, and specimens in various Utah collections should be checked.
