Commodities (Major) - Copper
Development Status: Past Producer
Deposit Model: 96: Native Cu
Host Rock Unit: Portage Lake Volcanics
Host Rock: Basalt
The Vulcan Mining Company was organized in 1864 and began operations the same year on a fissure vein of rich copper. One shaft was sunk on the vein and much mass copper was recovered. The mine only operated for two years until 1866 when a lack of manpower halted operations. In total, 613 pounds of copper ingots were produced. If the piles can be located, copper should be available for the collector.
