An underground iron mine opened in 1882 by the Norwich Iron Company and later operated by the Detroit Iron Mining Company. Produced 140,841 tons between 1882 and 1890. In the 1950s a shaft believed to be from the Detroit mine caved in in the front yard of a residence on Palms Avenue (US-41); the site can still identified today by the large iron pipe vent marking the capped shaft.
