Tertiary clay beds, which were worked for ochre in the early 19th century, are considered as the type locality of calcioferrite. The mineral was discovered by Blum in 1858 on a specimen preserved in the mineralogical collection of the University of Heidelberg, which was labelled as coming from Battenberg near Leiningen ("von Battenberg im Leiningischen"). The locality of the original find cannot now be located.
