Breiðdalur is a valley in Suður Múlasíslú, up from Breiðdalsvík, and is the most land-based valley in the Austfjörður. Breiðdalsá flows through it, a very good fishing river. The valley is divided by the mountain Kleifarháls into two valleys, Norðurdal, which is narrower, and Suðurdal, through which Highway 1 runs up Breiðdalsheiði. Breiðdal is surrounded by high and majestic mountains, the highest of which are over 1,100 meters high, especially the mountains to the south of the valley, between Berufjarður and Breiðdal.

Breiðdalur is a grassy countryside, and you can see thickets in many places. Sheep farming is one of the main occupations of the residents of the district, as well as fish processing in the village of Breiðdalsvík. The best-known town in Breiðdal is the church site Heydalir or Eydalir.
