A lease to mine here was obtained in 1854: a contemporaneous report noting an earlier existing adit, 40 fathoms in length, driven on a 10ft lead lode that had been traced across the property for 1200 fathoms. However, despite extravagant claims that the mine was likely to become "one of the greatest lead mines in Devonshire), by 1857 the company was heavily in debt and forced into administration.

Restarted in 1862, by 1867 the engine shaft had been driven to 50 fathoms, with a crosscut driven on the lode, which consisted of gossan, quartz and mundic [pyrite]. No saleable ore was raised and by 1868 working had ceased and the equipment sold.
