Gold. Limited information found. Gold is said to have been found in the Pell Creek, Alfred River, and Maruia River. The promising sounding Sluice Box Gorge is around 3 kilometres east of Springs Junction, although its uncertain if the name comes from historic gold mining, or the narrow chasm the Maruia water rushes through. The Alfred River joins the Maruia at the gorge, with Pell a tributary off the Alfred. Both can be accessed via walking tracks to Lake Daniels and Mount Baldy.
In 1983, there was an application to establish an open pit gold mine of the western banks of the Maruia River, however it was successfully opposed by environmental groups. Blackadder Mining was operating in the lower Pell stream in the 1980's, and a hut remains, with a number of vertical shafts beside the track. Online chatter indicates a number of private claims in the area, or land controlled by the Department of Conservation.
