Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Modern geology methods have identified areas containing gold, and a large pit was usually dug. Old timers in the 1890's did not have this luxury.

The Rock of Cashel lease was south of the Midlothian leases. Owned in 1896 by J.W. Perryman and W. Clarke. It was a small lease of 3 acres. They also owned the Kingsware lease of 6 acres. A large conglomerate lode 21 feet wide was announced in 1896, full they said of coarse and fine gold, extraordinarily rich. Two shafts had been sunk, although only to 21 and 24 feet. Two ironstone bars had been encountered also full of gold. It was a mine dreams were made of.

A more circumspect report appeared 18 months later, stating the old shaft was being deepened, and if a shoot of gold exists at all, it will be between the two bars.

Somehow they were able to convince a syndicate to take over the mine in July 1899, which changed its name to the Rose Shamrock and Thistle. A moderate yield is noted despite the massive lode. One month later the first crushing did not meet expectations. October 1899, only 2 months later the lease was forfeited.

The lease is surrounded by gold bearing land, and a small pit whose name could not be found is about where the lease once was. The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate until confirmed.
