The Homeward Bound Gold Mine is found half-way between Bummers Creek and the modern Murrin Murrin nickel mine, and 3 kilometres north of the Leonora-Laverton Road. It consists of a 1 kilometre line of historic shafts trending south south-west to north north-east, both sides of the east-west flowing Katata Creek.
It was a fruitless search for information on this locality. Both Homeward Bound and Federation were popular names for gold mines at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Several were found in this district alone. Homeward Bound probably as an optimistic thought of much gold would be found, and the miners could escape the heat and flies back to their homelands. Federation was a name invariably given to mines by Australian eastern seaboard miners as a political statement, as they were keen to see a commonwealth of Australia rather than separate colonies. Western Australians were less keen on the idea. The Kalgoorlie area had threatened to succeed from the Western Australian colony, and considering the colony was almost completely reliant financially on gold from the area, it was forced to join the federation.
