Located on the eastern outskirts of the town, just south of the entrance road, and south-east of the Stray Shot mine. In fact the Excelsior was initially linked to the Stray Shot. Both were taken out by Marble Bar pioneers, Ted Francis, Bill Edmondstone, and Harry Jenkins, who were the first to discover gold at Marble Bar in 1891.
The reef was 14 inches wide, with three shafts sunk 50 to 80 feet in depth. In 1897, the mine was sold to the Stray Shot and Excelsior Gold Mining Company for 750 pounds, who the following year let it on tribute to Joshua Steel. Information on the mine then dries up, and it is noted in 1905 crushings from it have been combined with the Augusta mine.
