Area 1800 kmΒ² includes 65 known eruptive centres from 54 localities (Whitehead et al. 2007). The volcanic rocks overlie Paleozoic metamorphic and volcanic rocks and granites, as well as Tertiary sediments, and include lava shields, 35 cinder cones, 9 maars and a phreatomagmatic diatreme. 16 of eruptive centres have been classified as shield volcanoes.
