Tertiary lignite deposit, explored by open cut workings.
Located 2 km east of Berstadt and about 8 km NE of Wölfersheim.
The open pit is now flooded with water and named Unterer Knappensee from German 'Knappe' = mine worker or miner. Vivianite is known from that area since the 19th century.

NOTE: The famous Vivianite is closely connected with the location Berstadt; the lignite deposit, now Unterer Knappensee belongs not to Wölfersheim community and Regierungsbezirk Darmstadt but to the community of Hungen in the Landkreis and Regierungsbezirk Gießen as you can see on the map
