Montgomery Prospect

bentonitic clay
Structure: Series Of Faults

Deposit: Bentonite outcrops in places over an area at least 2,000 feet long and several hundred feet wide. Portions of deposit are covered with iron-stained soil to a depth of 3 feet or more. Commercial montmorillonite exposed in 3 pits and one natural outcrop.

Development: Previously owned by martin n. Chiatovich. In 1936 the deposit was worked on a royalty basis by the naval ammunition depot at hawthorne.

Geology: Oldest nap unit is a silty montmorillonite colored from various shades of gray, yellowish-gray, to brownish gray. The overlying unit is a grayish-orange, altered material that is mainly gypsum, cristobalite and opal. Although the original rock type is not evident, it probably was a tuffaceous rock. Impurities in the montmorillonite deposit include cristobalite, plagioclase, quartz, k-feldspar, calcite and gypsum. A series of faults with diverse strikes and low- to high-angle dips usually form the contact between the montmorillonite and the siltstone. Most of the faults have apparent movements of less than 3 of 4 feet; a few have displaced 15 feet or more.
