Iron ore (hematite) was mined and smelted in the Ferrera Vecchia - San Pancrazio area during the 13th and 14th centuries.
Traces of old workings and outcropping ore are still observable at the foot of the rocky wall above San Pancrazio (Côte du Lamet foot) and near the Cenischia stream to the southeast. Remnants of an ancient furnace are present on the right bank of the stream. In addition to the ore outcrops, the medieval exploitation was very probably extended to the ore veinlets embedded in the large boulders, which sometimes attain cyclopic sizes, originated from the huge Côte du Lamet landslide (rock avalanche).
