The Reform Mine No. 1 operated from 1867 and ceased work in 1891. It produced around 3,000kg of gold from working a section of the Haddon Lead. The “mullock heap” is situated on the west bank of Smythe’s Creek, and bounded by a reserve and overlooks the Ballarat Kart Club. The “mullock heap” is comprised of quartz, both as waterworn cobbles and fresh white reef quartz, and greenish slate.
Note: The “mullock heap” is actually a mound 120 by 50m by 7m high made of mullock. The original mullock heap has been reshaped and made to appear more like a natural feature. When this was done is unknown. A shame.
