The Croft Mine (SW Sec 1 T46N R29W) is the only Cuyuna Range underground mine where the surface facilities are still, at least periodically, accessible. The mine site was designated an historic site by the State of Minnesota in 1978. The shaft house and dry house were restored and the site opened as a park in 1978. Further restoration added more facilities and provided a museum and a simulated shaft descent and tour. More recently funding issues have caused the site to be closed and fenced off by the Minnesota DNR, accessible only under restricted conditions. The Croft Mine whose development was begun in 1907 by the John E. Savage and Sons Company. The initial shaft was a concrete-lined opening down to 100 feet where it struck bedrock. A steel shaft descended another 140 feet to intersect the main ore bodies. The mine was worked between 1914 and 1933, producing over 1.7 million tons of manganiferous iron ore. All of the workings were ubdergorund. The ore was in two bends of steeply dipping slatey iron formation of the Proterozoic Trommald Formation, separated by a band of chlorite schist. The iron formation showed extensive secondary enrichment. Drill core showed enrichment extended to a depths of over 800 feet, with samples assaying 40 - 50% iron.
