A former placer/drift Au mine located in the SE¼ sec. 21, T4N, R12E, MDM, 2.9 km (9,700 feet) SE of San Andreas (1½ miles by road. located in the Fort Mountain or entral Hill channel). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
NOTE: Of the 3 USGS MRDS files, file #10109159 is the only one placing this mine in sec. 12. The other 2 place it in sec. 21, in agreement with the topo map. The data presented in file #10109159 are in error.
The channel is capped with a breccia of basaltic and andesitic pebbles. There is an old 100 foot vertical shaft which connects with a tunnel driven in bedrock of soft slate for 450 feet and 100 feet in blue cemented gravel. The pay gravel is 150 feet in width with a depth of 7 feet was fomerly mined. The channel is 280 feet wide overall and 63 feet deep. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada Foothills).
Workings include underground openings. An old drift mine. 450 feet of breasting was done. New operators (1936) have reopened the 100 foot shaft and drifted 40 feet SW in old workings. 5 men were employed.
Production data: Over $360,000 (period values) in 1905.
