A former Pb-Cu-Au-Zn-Ag mine located in sec. 29, 30 & 31, T22S, R45E, MDM, 3.6 km (2.2 miles) SW of Slims Peak (coordinates of record) and 6 miles SE of Ballarat S side of South Park Canyon, on Bureau of Land Management wilderness land (Manly Peak Wilderness). Operated during the period 1942-1944. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

(John) Thorndike's next move was to Ballarat, where his name was linked to the rich Gibraltar silver-lead mine in South Park Canyon, which he supervised, and to the Big Horn lead-silver property eight miles southeast of the town that was one of four claims comprising the Honolulu Mine, worked intermittently from 1907 on, producing mainly during World War II. Thorndike was superintending the latter property in the 1920s over a force of fifteen miners who were building a five-mile auto/truck road to connect with the Ballarat-Trona road to be used for heavy ore shipments to the smelters. It has been said that this was the first mine to ship ore from the Panamints by truck. Thorndike's contribution to the area's development must have been considered substantial, for South Park Canyon has also been known as Thorndike Canyon.Greene, 1981

Mineralization is a vein deposit with 4 veins hosted in marble. Description of the 4 principal veins: (1) Homolulu: ranges in width from a thin seam to 3 feet (0.91 meter), and assaying at 50% Zn & 10 to 15% Pb; (2) Carbonate claim vein: 2 to 10 feet wide and containing principally zinc carbonates with some Pb carbonates; (3) Iron vein claim: 2 to 5 feet thick for 100 feet. Vein matter consists of gossan and small amounts of Zn & Pb carbonates; and: (4) Big Horn claim vein: lies Β½ mile (0.8 km) E of the Honolulu claim, strikes eastward, dips 20 to 30S, with a width that varies from a few inches to 7 feet. Ore from this ore body consists of cerussite and galena, assaying at 50 to 70% Pb. Local geologic features include faults. The country rock is tremolitized, white, fine-grained marble. Local rocks include Precambrian rocks, undivided, unit 1 (Death Valley).

Workings include underground openings. On the Honolulu claim there is a 400 foot adit and a 35 foot winze. The Carbonate claim adit is 135 feet. The Iron Vein claim adit is 100 feet long. The Big Horn claim has an 80 foot inclined shaft and several drifts.

Ore contained an average of 14.6% Pb, 23.2% Zn, 3.84 ounces Ag/ton plus recoverable Cu. No record of early production available.
