Manitowoc County is underlain by Silurian sedimentary rocks, primarily dolostones. Thick glacial sediments, including lake sediments from ancestors to present day Lake Michigan, obscure the bedrock in most places. The world-famous Two Creeks Forest Bed crops out sporadically along the shore. This records a forest that was buried by rising lake levels when drainage was blocked by re-advancing ice about 11,750 years ago. Beach combing along Lake Michigan's shore can provide interesting samples of local and glacially transported rocks.
