How to ContributeMovie

28th Jun 2015 06:44 UTCChristian Auer 🌟 Expert

Today I tried to upload a movie on mindat http://www.mindat.org/photo-692586.html

I did so before about one year ago and it worked fine.

Uploading was no problem today, I see that its a movie but it will not start.

Did I make a mistake?

Edit: The link doesnt work although its the correct adress. When you got to the "New Photos today" button you`ll find it.

Edit (U.K.): Removed the full stop (then the link works).

It was never possible for me to start a video here on mindat. Any ideas how can I start a viedo? My browser: Firevox 38.0.5.

Here is the other one I uploaded Martin.

Its no problem for me to see this one:

I can confirm that the new movie doesn't start, unlike the old one.

The problem with movie playback is either that the upload was not completely successful or the format of the video is not compatible. I need to examine the video to find out for sure. Our video support is still very experimental

29th Jun 2015 17:49 UTCAmir C. Akhavan Expert

The upload was completely successful.

The format of the video is compatible: MP4-Container, H.264 High 3.1 / HE-AACv2.

(This format will of course not play in Firefox without an extra plugin due to software patent wars, but that is a different story).

The problem is very simple:

The URL in the page is incorrect.

"/video/06511380014354695445403."

instead of

"/video/06511380014354695445403.mp4"

Perhaps caused by an error in the renaming script used when uploading.

Thank you Amir. That saved me much time.

Chris, your video is now fixed.

Thank you very much Amir and Jolyon!

Some will hopefully like the video; there were generations of collectors in this mine.

Tried on my PC - works well. Thanks for this interesting video add, Chris!

You are welcome Lukasz. I've just made a movie from another classic mine in Austria, the Neuschurf adit in Leogang. Will upload it next week. I always find it nice to sit at home with a beer, see the movie and remember that adventure.

(tu) Good luck with the forthcoming adventures (-:

Unfortunately it doesn`t work again ...

It worked (including sound) but only for 2 s (first try), then 5 s (second try), then it stopped several times, but in each case continued a few seconds later.

Obviously some kind of buffering problem.

EDIT: Using latest Firefox.

30th May 2016 14:51 UTCChristian Auer 🌟 Expert

Yes it workes fine with Internet Explorer and Firefox but not with Chrome.

Interesting video. Perhaps this winter I will start five minute videos about mineralogy classes?

Hardness test is one we've always needed.

This is a 206.9 megabyte size video.

The video bitrate of the H.264 stream is 17.5 MBit/s.

This is way too much for a video this size.

Many people will have problems playing this in real time.

It took me more than 5 minutes to download the 99 second clip.

I guess this is an out-of-camera-clip (editing being done in the camera), or the encoding settings were inappropriate (GOP size is 16, should be more like 60 to 90).
1-2 4 MBit/s should normally do, this one is rather "noisy", so 4 6-8 Mbit are probably needed.

Audio is o.k., though :-D

30th May 2016 20:46 UTCAmir C. Akhavan Expert

I re-coded it to 6 MBit/s (two-pass X.264) at home to get an idea.

Some loss of detail (because of the noisy input), of course, but still not terrible.

The video doesn't work in either Chrome or Firefox for me here. As Amir suggests the high bitrate is probably the issue.

I just ran both videos on Firefox; no issues here with the video or sound so long as I initially let them load in completely. Good job, Christian!! (tu)

Thanks Paul, meanwhile you can see also the first good specimen from that trip here on mindat like moschellandsbergite, paraschachnerite and gortdrumite.
