This mine was started as an iron mine in 1696 to work two hematite-bearing veins hosted in the contact zone between granite and overlying schists. Rich china clay deposits, formed by intense kaolinitization of two pegmatites in the granite rim, were discovered by chance around 1700. The superior quality of this material for the production of white china was recognized in 1708, when August der Starke, Duke of Saxony, ordered a screening of raw materials from various deposits for his manufacture at Meißen. Until its closure in 1860, the St Andreas mine remained the only china clay provider for this famous manufacture.
