Ordinary chondrite, unequilibrated (H3-4)
Fall, 8 August 1897; 467 g, 2 stones
During the evening a great fireball appeared in the western sky and exploded with a brilliant light. A small 275 g piece fell into a paddy where it was quickly dug out. Another smaller stone (192 g) was recovered the next day from a bamboo grove. The meteorite's interior is dominated by distinct and abundant chondrules with diverse textures of varying composition. Olivine and lesser amounts of clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene are the predominant constituents of the chondrules, fragments, and associated matrix. Accessory troilite and Fe-Ni metal, minor plagioclase, glass, and very small amounts of phosphate are also reported. A cosmic ray exposure age of ~54 Ma is reported.
Nio is one of 44 witnessed unequilibrated ordinary chondrites and is the single witnessed fall labelled as exactly 'H3-4'. [A much larger find, the 86 kg Tulia (a), Texas find of 1917 is one of the several other H3-4 finds.] The largest Nio stone has been lost, but the smaller stone has been held at the National Science Museum in Tokyo.
