Linden's Reward

Linden's Reward is considered the first lease on the field, discovered by a party including a prospector named Linden (surname) which gave its name to the town and goldfield. While important historically, it subsequently was proved to not be a major mine in the area.

The old mine is located half-way between the old Linden town site and the Lake Carey salt-pan. Alluvial gold was found in two adjacent gullies.

The first ore from the lease was taken by camel all the way to Coolgardie where they obtained 25 ounces. A five head mill was then erected on the property.

The lease had been abandoned by the original prospectors, due to the hard granite and quartzite country, and a heavy inflow of water to 50 feet of the surface.

In 1908, the lease was taken up by a Kookynie syndicate consisting of Morland, Davis and Bozack (surnames). Mining ended in 1913, and nothing much happened at the site for the next 35 years.

In 1947, G. Nicoll sent 63 tonnes for 60 ounces through the state battery. He had re-pegged the lease mid 1946 as P.A. 1505F. Nicoll had investigated four shafts on the property to shallow depths, and installed a small plant on one of the shafts.
