Rather grandly named, the Gascoyne Goldfield in the sources, this location never amounted to much when it comes to gold. The Cobra Station homestead is 37 kilometres west of Mount Augustus, and is open to tourist traffic. About 500 metres south of the homestead, behind a ridge, is various bulldozer scrapings, and some exploration trenches, signifying the former workings. Just because the station will sell you petrol, and fix tyres, does not automatically mean you can run around with a metal detector.
The site was discovered in 1896. Described as north-west to south-east parallel lodes, 1.5 miles along strike. A dyke extends along the north-east side of the lode, next to which considerable quantities of rough gold was found. The host rock is slate and diorite. There were a number of shafts, but it is uncertain how many of these remain with time, and the actions of the bulldozer. They had been sunk to the water level being 50 feet.
It was 6 feet between the walls, inbetween highly mineralized glassy quartz, with visible coarse and fine grained gold, with 1200 tonnes at grass. So all this is positive, however it is noted by the end of 1929, it had only produced 553 ounces of alluvial, and 367 tonnes for 405 ounces, over the prior 32 years.
The place was discovered by Carnarvon prospectors Fenner and Baston in early 1896. The biggest producer was the Carnarvon Gem at 176 tonnes of ore for 154 ounces of gold. A shaft had been sunk to 70 feet on some small leaders. All the workings were abandoned by 1900. A battery had been erected but for some unspecified reason, it could not deal with the stone. The Gem of Carnarvon was a syndicate of twelve men, who spent 3000 pounds on the mine, and got a return of 150 pounds.
