Gold was discovered here by W. Chartaley and W.S. Smith, from Brisbane, who uncovered specimen gold from the cap of the reef. The lease was purchased for 600 pounds in September 1888 by the Jackson's Reef Gold Mining Company, with A.B.H. Wright as mine manager. Seventy-seven ounces of retorted gold from the mine was displayed in the window of the Taylor and Co. store in Halls Creek in 1888.

The workings were on a cross leader, which intersects a 10 foot wide diorite dyke. The leader strikes west north-west, dips steeply south, 6 inches to 2 feet wide. The richest gold was found where the leader is thinnest. Stoping had occurred either side of the dyke to a depth of 25 to 55 feet, and 40 feet length. Small veins of calcite are on the walls of the leader.

The mine produced 97 tonnes of ore for 252 ounces of gold prior to 1897.
