Ordinary chondrite (H5)
Fell, 20 October 1951, 21:00 hrs; 4 g (preserved)
At least 11 stones fell, but apparently only a single piece has been preserved at a known locality. Olivine and low Ca-pyroxene ('bronzite') are characteristic of the H-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically, the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine and pyroxene along with minor amounts of Fe-Ni metal (kamacite and taenite), and troilite. Accessory chromite, copper, and ilmenite have also been reported. Magnetite with droplets of Ni-rich metal were found in the fusion crust. As the meteorite was examined by Paul Ramdohr the mineralogical inventory of its opaque phases is nevertheless more complete than a number of other much larger and more frequently studied ordinary chondrites.
The H (relatively high in total iron) chondrites are the second largest group of ordinary chondrite falls. Whatever the actual Yambo mass that was seen by humans, not unexpectedly the total recorded mass for Yambo is the least of massive of all 171 confirmed falls now listed exactly as 'H5' chondrites [late May 2017]. The 4 g mass is at United States National Museum in Washington, DC.
Note: coordinates were listed as 1Β° N, 22Β°30E but these are quite some way from the village of Yambo, coordinates of which are listed here.
