(Democratic Republic of the Congo)
Formerly known as Belgian Congo, Congo-Kinshasa and Zaïre (from 1971 to 1997).
Not to be confused with Republic Of The Congo (formerly French Congo, Congo-Brazzaville; http://www.mindat.org/loc-18493.html).
From about 2006, the country is to be subdivided into Kinshasa city and 25 provinces. Kinshasa has equal status to a province.
Formerly, Congo (Zaïre) was subdivided into 10 provinces and one 'ville neutre' (neutral city): Bandundu, Bas-Congo, Équateur, Kasaï-Occidental, Kasaï-Oriental, Katanga, Kinshasa City, Maniema, Nord-Kivu, Orientale and Sud-Kivu.
