The mine was originally a lead mine worked by the London Lead Company from 1770-1880. Barytes began to be produced in 1884 and the mine was worked up till 1937. From 1939-1981 Athol G Allen Ltd held the lease, they explored the ground for witherite and barytes with some production.
The grid reference is for the main adit which has been blocked. The mine worked several veins listed below, and the workings intersected quite extensive sections of cave passage.
The dumps from this adit provided the first Northern Pennine occurrence of carbonate-cyanotrichite.
Veins worked;
Wensley Vein
Read Vein
Nacky or Old Sun Vein
White Vein
Little White Vein
Cavern Vein
Lunehead No 1 Vein
Hunters Vein
