The Armour #1 and Armour #2 mines (sec. 10 and 11 T46N R9W) began as underground workings by Inland Steel at in 1910, with the first ore shipped in 1912. Mining continued into the 1960's, with the deepest operations at the 800 foot level. Strip mining began on both properties in 1915. The mines remained active until the 1970's. The ore was exceptionally manganiferous, with values up to 14% locally. The ore was in the thin bedded ferruginous chert portion of the Proterozoic Trommald banded iron formation. Both mines had abundant masses of chlorite schist complexly interspersed with ore. At the Armour #2 mine textural evidence suggest at least part of it is thought to be metamorphosed igneous rock (quartz diorite) and, with the rest metamorphosed wall rock of the Rabbit Lake Formation. The chlorite schist oxidizes to a hematite schist. The Armour mines eventually became part of the Pennington Mine.
