A former lode Au mine located in the NE¼ (estimated) sec. 26, T6N, R13E, MDM, 0.4 km (0.3 mile) E of Independence and 0.7 km (0.4 mile) NNE of Railroad Flat (3½ miles SSE of West Point). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.


Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in slate and schist. The ore body strikes N15W and dips 65NE at a thickness of 2.13 meters. A 2 to 7 foot thick vein occurs in graphitic schist and quartz-mica schist. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).

Workings include underground openings comprised of a shaft with an inclined depth of 680 feet. A second shaft 1,200 feet N is 210 feet deep. Both are now caved.

Production data are found in: Clark, Wm. B. & P.A. Lydon (1962).

Total output was in excess $150,000 (period values). During 1867, one 42 ton lot of ore yielded over $2,500 (period values).
