Fond du Lac County is underlain by Ordovician to Silurian sedimentary rocks, which are found in scattered outcrops. The carbonate rocks are often quarried when found, and can provide calcite, quartz, marcasite, pyrite and other minerals in small crystals. Most of the County is covered by thick deposits of glacial drift. These can, from time to time, yield interesting minerals such as "drift" copper nuggets. They also show excellent continental glacial landforms, such as seen along the Ice Age National Scenic Trail and in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The Henry S. Ruess Ice Age Interpretative Center has excellent displays and programs on this phase of Wisconsin's history.
