Does anyone know what this is? It was found near some old mining related ruins in a rusted out box that contained about a dozen of these test tubes, each with these parts in it. Based on a coke bottle I found nearby it probably dates around 1931.

the surface on the close up reminds me of the old catalytic tent heaters that Coleman and others made. The burned naphtha but were started using iso alcohol on the domed top. The fact they are in glass must be clue that were meant to be kept clean and uncontaminated? After reading my own comments not sure this gets you any closer to an answer :-S
