Techniques for CollectorsRotary Drill

6th Oct 2017 17:58 UTCScott Rider

Has anyone used something exactly or like the tool in the link below? I have a plethora of large combo specimens from various locations in Colorado that are in need of trimming before I try to sell them.. Most are the typical Pikes Peak pegmatite minerals (fluorite, quartz, feldspars, etc) and I have quite a few good combos that are too big, too ugly in their current state to be sold and I was thinking this is a viable, inexpensive option to try to trim these...

Scott, from reading the ad, I don't believe the Dremel is included - it's only the "workstation". You will still have to obtain the Dremel rotary tool. At least that's how I read the ad....

Yeah, I should have been more clear... I have the Dremel tool, but was wondering if anyone has used this setup or something similar. I have used the Dremel and a drill to put holes into rock matrices but having something that is more stable might make it easier for me.

Scott,

I must be missing something. Exactly how are you planning on using a "small" dremel tool to trim large specimens? It is basically a drill press stand. Are you planning on drilling a series of holes and then a chisel?

Happy trails,

Jim

As a machinist, I can tell you to forget it. Dremel tools have crappy bearings with poor preload. The drill press stand is a piece of crap. I tried to use one but eventually threw it out. I made my own drill press stand.

Sometimes I use a dremel-like tool by hand to cut some small specimen. However not as a drill: I prefer to make cuts with diamond disks.
