Improving Mindat.orgMindat News is NOT news

1st Jun 2012 21:45 UTCWilliam W. Besse Expert

...it is Mindat History

The newest Mindat News item is approaching 4 months old and the older "news" is approaching one year. This is the slowest moving section of the front page. I believe it is time to downgrade it.

I have thought of a few options to start the ball (thoughts) rolling:

1) Shove Dealer News under Mindat News (cutting the size of News in half) and give the extra space in the right column to New Discussions that turns over on a fairly fast pace.

2) Switch locations of News and Discussions, amounting to the same size changes.

3) Combine News, Articles, and recently removed Blogs. You could still probably cut the space in half. If you thought this might be confusing you could add a tag in front to differentiate them (Example "Article: My New Article").

Alternatively we could have more news :)

If you want to have a news item published on mindat, here's what to do.

Write your news item as an article. Don't publish it.

Create an icon image, jpeg 32x32 pixels. You can usually do this by cropping and then scaling part of an image.

email ME your article link (the private link that it gives at the bottom of your article, and the jpeg.

If we feel the news item is worth publishing, we will. But we can't publish everything, and don't expect one or two paragraphs of text to make the cut.

Just a question for Jolyon, how many suggestions for Mindat News have been turned down since the last one was approved? Also, the last one was a preliminary report, where is the follow-up?

Problem is that all users are happy to send opinions, criticized etc. But people who want to share knowledge, spend time etc is very few.

Mindat news are all made by Jolyon and he is enough busy with Mindat general problems.

So - you want to have more news? Write them! Share your new discovers!

Mindat needs you :-)

Best!

I do have to apologise - since Tucson I have been busy with too many other things to devote much time at all to Mindat (such is life when you're newly married!). I wanted to find time to do a proper roundup of Tucson this year, but have not had the free time to do it yet.

Jolyon,

My suggestion has nothing to do with your available time. As they say you are already putting in 25 or 26 hours a day.

It was an idea to put up more of what seems to catch people's interest and that seems to be the discussions. The idea of people writing more news articles is good, and they are, but they are putting it in the message boards.

But then again, this is a mute point as this thread has not given rise to any user discussion so must not be any interest in a change.
