Field CollectingBlack sooty material covering Quartz

14th Jun 2016 03:14 UTCjosh garrity

Recently while in a quarry in hawley PA I can across a few specimens of tiny but well formed Quartz crystals on serpentine. Covering a lot of the crystals and material in general was a sooty type material, jet black. Any idea what this may be?? Indicator of other minerals. Veins etc were very very scarce here.

manganese oxides?

Probably a mangan mineral. Use muriatic acid to remove it. Should be easy.
