Field CollectingOpals in Central America

9th Sep 2016 21:38 UTCRobert Darabos

I've read that Opals occur commonly in Guatemala, as well as Honduras, with some high grade material found in Honduras.

Mindat doesn't seem to have any information about either of these countries Opal locations.

Does any one have any ideas?

I have a rough black opal from Honduras that is quite pretty. I believe it is from the Tablon Mine, but I'll have to pull it out and see what the location is....

A Google search on "Honduras opal mines" will pull up quite a bit of info, once you wade through the jewelry pages. From what I know, these opals form in bands within a vesicular black basalt with the opal being congealed within the rock itself during formation.

From Erandique, Honduras, quite close to the border with El Salvador.

I actually found out about the Tablon mine right after posting this. It sounds like their export laws for their opals are getting increasingly strict, so it may not be an option.

I'll be living in Guatemala. Anyone know of opal locations from there?

Or anything close. I know I'll be pretty close to Chiapas, Mexico, so I'm sure that will become a reaccuring visit!

But yeah, was the articles about Guatemalan opal b.s.? Cause I've never seen any available or heard about it before.
