Fakes & FraudsVeracruz Amethyst Verification? Pinterest specimens fake?

5th Nov 2018 03:41 UTCChris Schlosser

2 Questions

#1

Is it just me or do the specimens on Pinterest seem fake and man made? So colorful and such nicely formed crystals...

#2

Is this Vera Cruse amethyst legit? It looks like it to me. Just need verification.

THANKS Guys!

All natural

Vera Cruz has produced and continues to produce lots of delicate and vibrant Amethyst.

As an aside, much of photos on pinterest appear to be "pinched" from other sources

You might also want to consider that quite a lot of mineral/gem/lapidary photos on the internet do not show natural colours, whether that is intentional or not. As pinterest is a meltingpot of pictures from all kinds of sources, I would not be surprised to see a substantial amount of photos with (more or less) obviously enhanced saturation. In fact, you will likely also see multiple versions of the same photo when scrolling through the lists, as some pictures have been copied (and cropped/"freed" of logos/"enhanced"/resized) quite often.

Chris, I get the feeling that you may have recently discovered the wonderful hobby of mineral collecting. If I'm wrong I apologize, but if I'm right I can tell you that even the most experienced collectors are still learning. Also, if you have visited mineral and gem shows, there is sometimes a quantum leap between the quality of specimens you see there versus what you can see online. The online galleries often feature some of the best specimens ever found, while at the shows you'll see the specimens that a selection of dealers have at that time. While these specimens may be good, they pale when compared with the best of the best.

Benjamin brought up a good point about mineral photographs. Sometimes the colors in online photos, as well as those in even the most prestigious mineral magazines, aren't accurate. This is due to a number of factors that I won't go into here, but be aware that this is something that is not rare. If you want to read up on this do a search on "problems photographing minerals". You'll find a LOT to read!

Isn't that precisely Pinterest's intent? Pinterest is a digital tack board, a place for people to 'pin' things that inspire them. Personally, I've never found the site to be of much use. But I do know that most who use the site are collecting other people's images, not their own.

Unquestionably a nebulous subject; I'm still not certain how Pinterest, Youtube, et al, managed to circumnavigate the ordinarily tough copyright laws by pushing the burden of responsibility onto the copyright owner and the 'borrowing' individuals. As the adage goes, don't post anything to the internet you don't want shared around the world.
