General23 years ago today...

25th Dec 2016 13:12 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Twenty three years ago today I started writing a little mineral database program, in C, to allow me to store and search mineral locality references.

I called it mindat.

Little did I know then how much this would change my life!

Happy holidays everyone!

And a Great Creation has become of this little programming job :-) Many thanks to Joylon for that!

Interesting, how good a chance this holiday time is for wrapping up articles, too: just finished off another one for a magazine. Feels better then to sip a small dram of Malt, received as a Xmas gift ;-) . Sláinte!,

Best Christmas Wishes to Joylon & family, and all other Mindaters too!

Cheers,

So Mindat is like the universe: from a small nothing came everything!

Every journey begins with a first step. Can't imagine minerals without the aid of Mindat!

Thanks so much, Jolyon! And to all who have contributed to this Master Work!!!!

I use mindat daily as a reference. One of the first things I do each day is look at the "photo of the day". Then I look at discussions to see if there are any that I'd like to keep track of or participate in. Then I look at dealer updates. Most are pretty boring :-) so I move on to see if there are any new articles. If so, I check it/them out. My day has started! Throughout the day, I use mindat to ensure the localities on my website are correct or to source fact and details about minerals.. Hard to imagine mineral life without it!

Thanks Jolyon!

Like what David says I also check photo of the day every day, even in holidays. Marry Christmas and very happy New Year to Jolyon and all mindaters. It is interesting coincides that twenty three years ago I collected my first mineral piece. That was great time and can not be forgotten.

Enjoy holidays,

Vachik

Jolyon,I am very grateful that you created MINDAT and that I discovered it in my retirement years. Like Dave Joyce logging in to Mindat has become part of my daily routine. It has greatly aided my mineral education.

Thank you for your dedication to this great venture, and best wishes in the New Year to you and your family

I guess it did not only change your life, Jolyon ;-)

Be warned, mindat could be like a drug! I have never the intention to make a withdrawal treatment.

Martin, not "could be" it IS. I get my fix like many of you, every day. Jolyon, you have created a benevolent monster. And I sincerely thank you.

It revolutionized this hobby!

One thing I dreaded about retirement was loosing acces to University libraries ... Mindat has rendered that worry needless for my mineralogical interests and other sites have filled the need in other spheres - Many thanks to Jolyon for Mindat - and to a number of others for making such a wealth of information available on the internet (if you exercise prudence in eliminating the 'scam' sites from your list!).

Best wishes to all and my sincere thanks to all the Mindat community for helping Jolyon realise this monumental achievement

Cheers

I too would extend heart felt thanks for Joylon's efforts, and anyone else co-oped into the monumental effort. Being a field geologist, in the applied science end, I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to new and wondrous geological specimens, particularly where unusual processes are involved. I hope my small contributions to the various discussion threads are useful and welcome. I try my best to be factual and accurate to this essential project.
