"An acronym for the National Institute of Metallurgy of South Africa"

Is this now the SAIMM (http://www.saimm.co.za/)?

Hi Uwe,

No, it is now Mintek (which is derived from the revised name of "Council for Mineral Technology".

Interestingly, nimite was one of about 5 (?, from memory) nickel minerals described from the Bon Accord mineralisation by S.A. de Waal and co-workers at Mintek in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Hi Uwe and Malocolm,

Of interest is that I plan to write an article for Rocks and Minerals on nimite. The Editor has introduced a new column titled "The where of mineral names" that will focus on the derivation of minerals named after places. I'll be taking a photo of MINTEK soon and we can then post this on the nimite locality page.
