General"Unresolved questions from the managers" notice

Hi,

I noticed when I clicked on the Add Photo link that there was a notice about unresolved questions from the managers. When I clicked on the link supposedly leading to the unresolved picture cases, it just took me to my homepage. There is one photo that is still unapproved after quite a while.

I've repeatedly checked my Personal Messages when uploading pictures from time to time, but never in recent times have I received any PM's or emails regarding my uploads. I've had to post question messages on the forum to find out what the problems may be...

Does the PM system about pictures really work, and the above system for notifying users about unresolved issues?

Why, BTW, cannot managers send emails to people so they could better reach them?

I read my email constantly, from my phone and laptop, but Mindat PM's nor even evey day, because there is rarely anything there, even read-status changes to old messages with questions posted, to Joylon up to months ago ;-) .

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers,

Joel

Hi Joel

I note that one of your Thomsonites (Flinders) has had I believe, 3 emails sent - each stating that the specimen is out of focus and asking you to upload a better pic. Don't know if this is the one to which you refer.

Not sure about others although I think there was one where the locality was questioned (went from South Africa to South Australia), which from memory has since been approved.

I don't know if emails are received at the other end.

It's the same with locality edits. Emails can be sent privately but often they are not read or acknowledged, I don't think I sent you a private email, just a generic one from Mindat.

And lately there have been a number of access issues with Mindat so there may be some issues with PM as well.

Cheers and apologies if I have been the cause.

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the information. I regularly check even my junk email folder at firstnamelastname-at-hotmail.com but haven't received any emails from your address, strange...

Yes, I certainly have noticed issues with Mindat recently, especially when trying to carry out any searches. I just close all my Firefox windows, wait a while and then try again :-)

I'll try to fish out the thomsonite from the archives, re-photo it and replace the uploaded photo, thanks for the feedback!

Cheers,

Joel

A bit of a convoluted method to check, but one that will work.

Go to your mindat homepage

On the photo gallery option:

Show - Show unapproved photos

click the apply filter.

If you have unapproved photos (ones that not not currently awaiting for approval for the first time if your photos normally need approval)

You can then bring up these photos on their own photo page and then click the button at the bottom of the description section "Questioned photos"

This will show you the copy of the email that was sent to you.

This is the fail-safe when email doesn't get through.

We don't use the PM system to report photo problems unless it is done specifically by the person who approves photos. The automatic way is just handled through emails.

Hi David,

Finally, I see the managerial emails! I Will now take corrective measures.

Strange that the important messages have never actually reached my email address. Joylon..?

Cheers,

Joel

Thanks a lot for the info, David! I have exactly the same notification as Joel, but I couldn't figure out what was causing the problem or where to find any messages from the Mindat editors about it, as the link in the notification doesn't give any additional info. I'm also certain I never received any email in my mailbox, including my spam folder, as I check this several times a day for work.

Glad to have found the message at last so I can fix the issue.

"Strange that the important messages have never actually reached my email address. Joylon..?"

e mails are a bit of dark magic. We have had some problems with getting the emails out, but there can be problems on your end where the ISP considers email from mindat to be spam. Most providers do have the capability to "whitelist" emails from certain senders so that they will pass through their spam filters. I would suggest that you put mindat on this whitelist for your email provider (a lot of emails get blacklisted because there are links in the messages)

At one time I did have a gallery of photos that had unresolved problems, but it looks like it was deleted in one of the updates. Will see about getting it back in (the reason you get dumped back to the main page.)

Hi David,

My ISP does not per se block any traffic at all, to my knowledge, and I've never had any issues with any other emails.

But I suspect the ISP will issue a warning, or temporarily cut off my connection, if the monitoring process see a very high amount of malware traffic travelling to/from my IP address.

From what email address would the "Mindat" emails be arriving, anyways? And is my correct email address entered into the system part that we are talking about?

My paid hotmail does automatically transfer a lot of junk and some useful emails into the Junk folder, but as said I check the folder daily. So, I guess this will remain a mystery ;-)

I'm personally happy to check things using the indirect method, as often as I simply remember to do so :-)

Cheers,

Joel

It goes to your hotmail account. (you can check your current setting from the update my details on the top line next to the language drop down box)

The mail will come from a mindat.org address. (if the reviewers use the mindat system and do not email you directly from their personal email account.)
