GeneralBig Rock (3M) quarry barwoodite vs pyrophanite

9th Nov 2017 19:28 UTCPatrick Haynes (2) Expert

I was recently at the Cleveland micromount symposium. There was material from the Big Rock Quarry, Little Rock, Arkansas. In the rock were aegirine, red plates of barwoodite, lots of fleshy-colored acicular xls of eggletonite and less common were brown plates of pyrophanite, I went to Mindat's images for the minerals at the site. Most of the pyrophanite images are of red xls!

Are the red pyrophanites actually barwoodite?

If not then how do you distinguish between the 2?

Pyrophanite is a bit like hematite; looks redder in thinner crystals, so I suppose the apparent color is in part compositional and in part due to crystal habit, so it might be difficult to use color as the basis for distinguishing them?

I sent a message to my dad one time and asked him how to distinguish barwoodite from pyrophanite and this was his reply, "chemically". I believe I sent him the "poop" emoji in return, if I'm not mistaken.
