We have been under major spam attack (700+ messages in a few hours) so we have had to close down r e g i s t r a t i o n temporarily - probably for about a week. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I am adding these instructions in the hope this isn't read/understood by the spammers.

If you click on the registration link, you will be led to a 404 page (ie page not found.) You can manually add another underscore between the underscore character and dot in the name/url, then hit the enter key and you will be brought to the correct page.

i met someone at the beach toady and they will likely check out the website so hopefully they can navigate this and become a member

I would think if someone is interested, they could email Jolyon or one of the other admins to get registered...

Paul,

That's a good idea. But...

How would the new member know to e-mail Jolyon or one of the other admins to get registered? All they would see is the 404 error page. Would need to create a custom 404 page instructing them to e-mail Jolyon or one of the other admins in order to register. Which brings us full circle in that there would be no way to know that the the request to complete registration was legitimate and not a request by a spam bot. Wouldn't know until it was too late.

I remember that at one time in the past captcha software was used here to ensure that a robot was not posting messages. I know there were some issues with that program. My website host uses reCAPTCHA which is a vast improvement over the old version, It uses photos instead of numbers or an alphanumeric string of characters. Not sure how much the license for it would be.

I'm away for a week so unable to answer email requests for registration which is why I re-enabled registration before I left.

Unfortunately this resulted in a deluge of spam so David had to disable things in a more basic way than I would have.

I will be back and able to work on the site by Wednesday next week.

You only need to register if you want to participate in the messageboard. You can see most of the site without registering (there are some display options that you can use only if you are registered). Adding other information/pictures, requires "activating" your membership.

"Not sure how much the license for it would be." The program is Googles and they do not charge to use it. recently they have added the "I am not a robot" checkbox that can simplify things for users.

That is true.

One does not need to become a member to see the majority of the site, only to add information/photos. David: could you have instead of the 404 page some sort of page that states the "r word" is closed temporarily and to check back at a later time?
