Techniques for Collectorslubricant for microscope

13th Oct 2018 00:44 UTCDon Saathoff Expert

Would anyone like to recommend a tried & true lubricant for the sliding parts of a microscope? It's time for my yearly maintenance and I'd like to try a different grease.

True microscope dampening grease is the proper grease to use in a microscope as it stays put in hot conditions and doesn't allow the stage to creep. I have used lithium automotive grease in the past, but it tends to ooze out of the crevasses over time and doesn't hold up as well.

Thanks Paul. Can you recommend a source? BTW, Cookie & I are looking forward your's & Nat's presentation at the NM Mineral Symposium!

Nye Lubricants (https://www.nyelubricants.com/damping-greases) is where we used to get microscope grease through. I believe they still offer a "sampler pack" with various grades depending on your needs and application. I also believe you can order Nye grease through Amazon.

Thank you for the kind words, Don! Nat and I did a lot of research to come up with a presentation this year that I hope folks attending the Symposium will enjoy. Looking forward to seeing you and Cookie at the Tailgater....

Hi Don

Moebius . Is another make of grease for instruments. I think it is Swiss made.

I bought a small bottle years ago, not too sure if it was Amazon or Ebay . Cost an arm and a leg. :-)

Thank you Paul & Kevin! I had found Nye before but could find no small packages. Nye is the recommended lubricant - Nyeogel or Nyegel, I forget spelling. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and order. Maybe I can share a tube w/ another "scopist" down here....
